The Registrar's Office Veterans Affairs section at the University of Maryland processes
all educational benefits before sending the information to the regional VA benifits processing center in Buffalo, New York. Please take the time to read the
requirements and procedures on how to file for benefits.
Veterans Affairs serves a large group of students, so to avoid delays in processing claims,
it is extremely important to submit all information along with any changes in status.
Address and/or phone number changes also must be submitted.
When filing a claim always remember to include the supporting documents listed below.
For New Students:
- If applying for the first time, fill out a VA Form 22-1990 (Application for Education Benefits.)
- If applying under Chapter 30 (Montgomery GI Bill) attach your DD 214 (The release form from active duty.)
- If applying under Chapter 106 (Montgomery GI Bill-Reserves) you need a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) DD Form
2384-1, including a copy of your Military ID Card.
- If applying under Chapter 30, 32, 34, 35 or 106 and a transfer student, you need to fill out a VA Form 22-1995
(Request for Change of Program or Place of Training).
Benefits are only certified for the current semester.
Benefits will not automatically roll over from one semester to another. Complete the
Request for Certification for VA Benefits form each semester so that your benefits will not be interrupted.

Previously Certified University of Maryland VA Students
Every semester VA students must be certified to continue receiving the monthly benefits and are required to fill
out the Request for Certification for VA Benefits form.
