Refunds & Withdrawal from the University

NEW POLICY EFFECTIVE FALL 2002 - PROCEDURES FOR WITHDRAWAL FROM ALL CLASSES

Occasionally, students experience circumstances that impair their ability to satisfactorily complete an academic term. In such cases, withdrawal or leave of absence from the University may be appropriate. See the new withdrawal & leave of absence procedures for academic requirements before attempting to withdraw. The information below explains the financial implications of withdrawal and leave of absence. The entire policy can be found in the 2002-03 Undergraduate Catalog.
Note that cancellation of Housing and Dining contracts is a separate process. See Cancellation of Residence Halls/Dining Services for details.

WITHDRAWAL

Students may apply for withdrawal (from all classes) at any time between the first and the last day of classes. New regulations may require review by the Faculty Review Board in order to return to the University. See the new withdrawal & leave of absence procedures for guidelines.

Students must submit written notice of withdrawal to the Office of the Registrar beginning September 2, 2003 through the last day of classes. Withdrawal becomes effective on the date the form is filed with the Office of the Registrar. A notation of withdrawal and the effective date will be posted to the student's academic record.

Refunds of Tuition & Fees : Tuition credit will be initiated according to the effective date recorded by the Office of the Registrar. Refund amounts, by date are shown in the chart below. Stopping payment on a check does not constitute an official withdrawal.

Notes : Credit adjustments for unused housing services are based on the date residence halls checkout procedures are completed, not the date of withdrawal. All financial accounts must be cleared through the Office of the Bursar, Lee Building. Additionally, all library materials must be returned. Refunds for credit adjustments will be authorized after all student financial aid adjustments have been processed and any balance remaining on the account has been deducted.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE

Leave of absence from the University is available for students wishing to take time away from the University with the intention of returning the following semester. The leave of absence status may be helpful to recipients of federal financial aid. Students may apply for a leave of absence only during the last 60 days of the semester. The leave of absence period for Fall 2003 begins October 22, 2003.

Notes:

  • There are no refunds associated with leave of absence
  • Students with Federal Financial Aid should contact the Office of Student Financial Services to discuss the significant financial ramifications of such an action.

Cancellation (and a full tuition refund) is possible only if a cancellation is processed prior to the first day of classes. Otherwise a Withdrawal is processed. Cancellation of Housing/Dining Contracts is a separate process, see Cancellation of Residence Halls/Dining Services for more information.
