Spouse and Dependent Children - Tuition Remission Policy

Personnel Services Department, Staff Benefits Office, 301-405-5654
  • The University Board of Regents approved a tuition remission policy in 1990 for spouse and dependent children of permanent employees (50% time or more). The policy provides full tuition for a first undergraduate degree for the spouse and dependent children of permanent full time (100%) employees hired before January 1, 1990.
  • The spouse and dependent children of permanent part-time (50% or more) employees will be eligible for tuition remission based on the percentage of time on the payroll. Restrictions apply for spouse and dependent children of permanent employees hired on or after January 1, 1990. In addition, tuition remission benefits for the spouses and dependent children of permanent faculty and permanent staff whose period of employment began on or after July 1, 1992 shall be available for a first undergraduate degree only after the faculty or staff member has been in the university services for two years prior to the anticipated date of registration for course work.
  • Forms are available at each campus personnel department. If using the benefit at the University of Maryland, College Park, after obtaining the department head signature, the completed tuition remission form is to be forwarded, in a sealed envelope to Personnel Services Department, Staff Benefits Office, no later than:
    • December 1, 2001 for the Spring 2002 semester

July 1, 2002 for the Fall 2002 semester

  • If the established cap has not been reached by the above dates, all forms submitted up until then will be approved, and forms will continue to be accepted and processed on a first-come, first-served basis until the cap is reached. If the student receiving the tuition remission drops classes or withdraws from the University, all or part of the tuition costs may be charged to the student. Questions regarding tuition remission for the spouse and dependent children of employees can be directed to Personnel Services, Staff Benefits Office, 301-405-5654
