however, are required to register in-person at the Mitchell Building. Please read the registration information below on How
to Register and Adjust Your Schedule. Also decide whether you can use
Testudo or if you must register in-person.
Walk-in Registration or Schedule Adjustment:
Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Student Services, first Floor Mitchell Building
Any student can elect to use the walk-in method. Note that students
in categories 1-6 below are required to meet with an advisor before registering
or processing schedule adjustments.
- Newly Admitted Students - new students must attend an Orientation
program, and will be advised and register at that time. Call the Orientation
Office at 301-314-8217 to sign up for Orientation. The University also
requires all new students (graduate and undergraduate) to provide documentation of measles, mumps and
rubella, and tetanus/diphtheria. Additionally, students residing on-campus must
either be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, or sign a waiver. See
www.umd.edu/health for more information.
It is the student's responsibility to provide information to the University Health
Center prior to the beginning of the semester. These requirements are mandatory.
- Student Athletes
- Reinstated students
- Students in the Individual Admit and AAP programs
- Students on Academic Probation or Academic Dismissal (at the end of
the last semester, excluding summer sessions)
- Students with a Fundamental Studies block
Graduate Students: Follow the walk-in registration and schedule
adjustment dates and procedures on this page.
Please read information below before registering:
STEP 1- BE SURE YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER - CHECK
Testudo,
for Registration blocks and Make Advising Appointment:
Some students may have blocks or advising requirements that must be met
before they can register or adjust their schedule. Check the information
below to see if it may apply to you. Be sure to resolve any outstanding
blocks before using Testudo to register.
- Advising: Advising is required for some students, and highly
recommended for all students. Advising is mandatory prior to registering
for newly admitted students, readmitted and reinstated students, students
in certain majors, students on academic warning and dismissal, student
athletes, IED and AAP students, and students who still need to fulfill
fundamental studies requirements. Set up an appointment to see an advisor
as soon as possible.
- Students owing money to the University are not eligible to register
until they clear their accounts. To become eligible to register pay your
account balance at the Office of the Bursar, Lee Building at
least 24 hours prior to registering.
- Fundamental Studies Blocks: If you have completed 30 credits
and have not satisfied the Fundamental Math and English requirements, you
should contact your college office to discuss a temporary extension. If
you are going to register for the required course you must register in
person.
STEP 2 - SELECT COURSES : Select courses from
the
Schedule of Classes. Read course information carefully. The courses
you select, as well as any advising requirements, will determine if you
need to meet with an advisor prior to registering. Be sure to make note
of the five-digit index number listed with each course section. This number
is used by testudo to identify each individual section.
- Final Exams: The University has no policy on the number of finals
a student can take on one day. Students are strongly encouraged to check
the final
exam schedule before registering for courses. Those who find themselves
with finals scheduled during the same time or with more than three finals
in a day, should, during the Schedule Adjustment Period (first ten days
of classes), discuss the situation with the Assistant Dean of the college
in which they are majors.
STEP 3 - OBTAIN SPECIAL PERMISSIONS: Read course listings carefully
and pay special attention to note lines associated with each course. Some
registration actions do require special permission. Remember that all special
permissions and advising requirements must be met before registering.
Do you need Special Permission?
- Course Restrictions: These restrictions are listed with individual
courses in the course listing section of this Schedule. Some courses are
open to majors only, others have GPA or cumulative credit requirements.
Courses with the Perm Req notation require permission from the department
offering the course prior to registering. The department can enter the
permission directly into the registration system using the
Electronic
Stamp, or stamp and sign the schedule request form. The schedule request
form can then be taken to that department's
college, or the Registration Office for entry into the system. After
submitting permission, you must still process a registration of the course.
- Actions Requiring College Approval: All college offices have
access to the Electronic
Stamp and can enter special permissions directly into the registration
system. Exceptions to any of the restrictions listed below require college
approval prior to registering. Remember to register for the course (either
on testudo or in-person) after obtaining any special permissions.
- Maximum Credit Limit: Undergraduate students are generally limited
to registering for 16 credits until the first day of classes. Students
can then register for a maximum of 20 credits. Requests to register for
over 16 credits prior to the first day of classes require special permission.
Permission to take over 20 credits always requires college approval.
- CORE Restrictions: Students with over 90 cumulative credits
are restricted to registering for only one CORE course until the first
day of classes. Individual course listings indicate the CORE status of
a class. Any exceptions require college approval.
- Graduate Level Courses: Undergraduates requesting graduate level
courses (those numbered 500 and above) require college approval.
- Time conflicts: Time conflicts are not permitted. All exceptions
require college approval.
- Pass/Fail Grading Method: See
Pass/Fail
option requirements for undergraduate students.
- Re-registering for the same course: Students are limited to
the number of times they can register for a course. NO MORE THAN TWO REGISTRATIONS
are permitted for any one course. Each time a course is dropped with a
mark of W it will be counted as a registration.
- Immunizations: The University of Maryland requires all freshmen,
new graduate, and transfer students to provide documentation of Measles,
Mumps, Rubella, and Tetanus/Diphtheria. Additionally, students residing on-campus must
either be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, or sign a waiver. See
www.umd.edu/health for more information.
It is the student's responsibility to provide this information to the Health Center
before school begins. These requirements are mandatory.
STEP 4 - CHECK ON COURSE AVAILABILITY: Is the Course Open? Don't
wait until you are ready to register to find out. There are five ways you
can check on course availability:
- Use Venus for help in
building your schedule
- Schedule of
Classes
- Come to the Mitchell Building and check the course information
posted in the first floor hallway.
STEP 5 - COMPLETE REGISTRATION FORM AND REGISTER: Prior to registering
complete appropriate forms (for walk-in registration) and make sure all
special permissions and advising requirements have been met. Process schedule
adjustments and register by using Testudo, or during walk-in
schedule adjustment (see walk-in hours at top of page).
- Testudo: The Testudo web site, in addition to
drop/add,
has many other on-line student services.
- Walk-In Registration/Schedule Adjustment: Complete a Registration
form or Schedule Adjustment form for adds, drops, section changes, grading
option changes and credit level changes. Forms are available at the Registration
Counter, first floor Mitchell Building. Bring Photo ID and registration
card to Student Services first floor Mitchell Building. Make sure you are
eligible for all requested courses
STEP 6- PAY TUITION AND FEES: For information about tuition and fees see
bill payment or the
Financial Service Center home page
STEP 7 - ID CARDS:
- Students who need a Photo ID card must present a valid photo ID
at the Registration Counter, first floor lobby, Mitchell
Building, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. See ID
